What You Need to Know About Pyrethroid Label Changes

The labels of several Syngenta products will be changing in the near future, as will all pyrethroid products sold into the professional pest management market. These changes are being mandated by the EPA in an effort to reduce the potential for pyrethroid run-off from application to hardscapes around structures, which could lead to surface water contamination.

Effects on Syngenta Products
Many customers have recently asked how and when pyrethroid label changes will be affecting Syngenta products. Below are some of the key things you need to know:

·         The Syngenta labels that will be changing include Demand® CS, Demand EZ, Demand G, Demon® MAX and Demon WP insecticides.
·         The changes will take effect for newly manufactured product. Because of this, the timeline for the new labels to appear in the marketplace will vary by brand depending on the supply currently available in the distribution channel.
·         The label on the container that a PMP is using when he or she makes an application is the label that must be followed.
Label Changes
The label changes offer key advisory language as well as key mandatory language that will be enforceable. To reduce environmental hazards, new labels for pyrethroid products include the following best practices:
·         “Applying this product in calm weather when rain is not predicted for the next 24 hours will help ensure….”
·         “Rinsing application equipment over the treated area will help avoid run-off….”

New mandatory language that will be found on the labels provides these directives for outdoor applications:
·         All outdoor applications must be limited to spot or crack-and-crevice treatments only, except for the following permitted uses:
o   Treatment to soil or vegetation around structures
o   Applications to lawns, turf and other vegetation
o   Applications to building foundations, up to a maximum height of 3 feet
·         Do not water treated area to the point of run-off
·         Do not make applications during rain
·         Do not apply directly to sewers or drains, or to any area like a gutter where drainage to sewers, storm drains, water bodies, or aquatic habit can occur
