Planning ahead to prevent cockroach population changes

By Nicky Gallagher, Ph.D., technical services manager, Professional Pest Management, Syngenta

As summer approaches, thinking ahead about the upcoming seasons can make a big difference in the success of a perimeter pest program. For example, peridomestic cockroaches — which include the American cockroach, Oriental cockroach, smokybrown cockroach, Australian cockroach and various wood cockroach species — all have varying life cycle times, but population growth tends to spike during the warmer months. It can require more time and material to control these large populations when they are at their peak. Ideally, population suppression in the fall and winter will help reduce movement indoors later, and provide a head start on controlling them the following spring and summer.

Peridomestic species can be suppressed by targeting known problem areas and outdoor winter reservoirs, such as wood piles or tree holes. This can be achieved with careful trap placement, non-repellent sprays, insect growth regulators and bait applications. Consider a granular bait, such as Advion® Insect granular bait, to add another layer of protection and prevention into your year-round perimeter pest program. Advion Insect granular bait is formulated to be highly attractive and efficacious against perimeter pests like cockroaches, as well as provide fast-acting control. Granular baits can be placed in areas such as mulch beds, as well as around woods piles and the perimeter of structures. When using baits, remember that a thorough inspection will help guide where your application should go and provide the best results.

This same philosophy of preventing populations from spiking can also work with domestic cockroaches, such as German cockroaches. These cockroaches are typically suppressed in the winter, so take advantage of the opportunity and continue to monitor and treat with products like Advion Evolution Cockroach Gel Bait, Optigard® Cockroach Gel Bait and Archer® insect growth regulator. These products are recommended for use in the SecureChoice℠ Cockroach Assurance Program, which features an integrated pest management (IPM) approach for comprehensive cockroach control. By following the SecureChoice Cockroach IPM Guide, cockroach infestations will be reduced by at least 90% during the first four visits over a 60-day period. Using the program’s protocols and products can help prevent German cockroaches from rebounding when temperatures increase.

Planning for the upcoming winter will result in fewer call backs and more satisfied customers next year. For more information about effective cockroach control, please visit SyngentaPMP.com/Cockroach.
