Your guide to the complete perimeter treatment plan

Your guide to the complete perimeter treatment plan
By ElRay Roper, Senior Technical Representative, Syngenta Professional Pest Management

Perimeter pest control is a primary concern of many companies that offer residential or commercial services. An effective perimeter pest control plan can keep arthropod pests from gaining entry into your customers’ homes or businesses. However, a successful plan must include a number of elements if it is going to effectively protect the structure from pest invasion.

  • Start with inspection. As with any Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan, inspection of the property will help determine what services need to be offered. Proper sanitation and landscape maintenance are the first line of defense against pest entry. Exclusion of pests with proper fitting screens, door sweeps and weather stripping will help keep pests outdoors.
  • Determine appropriate controls. A variety of control measures can be taken, depending on the types of pests that are encountered on the premises:
    • The use of granular baits and insecticides in mulched beds and ground cover plantings can help control pests such as ants, crickets, cockroaches and earwigs. Advion® insect granule from Syngenta Professional Pest Management (PPM) can be used in areas that are not watered by sprinkler irrigation. The granules in Demand® G insecticide are ideal for mulched areas that are watered, as they will work their way below the mulch where insects are active.
    • A perimeter spray must be both fast-acting and have enough staying power to last between scheduled service visits. With its powerful iCAP technology formulation, Tandem® insecticide can be applied to landscape vegetation to control insects present at the time of application, and keeps on working for up to three months. Tandem also features systemic action on landscape plantings for improved control of honeydew-producing insects like aphids, which are primary food sources for many ant species.
    • Zone treatments can provide extended defense against entry of arthropod pests through voids and utility penetrations. Apply Tandem as a foam preparation with at least a 15:1 expansion ratio. Inject foam into the voids around exterior utility penetrations, into wall voids and into voids around window and door frames where insects commonly enter structures. Because these voids are protected from the elements, the application will last for months, as well as cover all surfaces of the void entrance because of its expanding properties.

With the broad range of products and multiple application methods offered by Syngenta PPM, it’s easy to build a complete perimeter pest control plan for any pest control situation you may encounter on your customers’ properties.
