When put to the test, granular fly baits soar above the competition for fly control.

In addition to being serious nuisance pests to people and animals, house flies (Musca domestica L.) are capable of transmitting a variety of viral and enteric (or intestinal) bacterial pathogens. Granular fly baits have been used for several decades to control these pests, as they are target-specific and generally easy to use.

As with any recurring pesticide application, overuse of any active ingredient is always a concern in the development of resistance within target species. House flies are no different, which is why new active ingredients are essential for effective fly control. Zyrox® fly granular bait from Syngenta Professional Pest Management (PPM) contains a novel active ingredient, cyantraniliprole, to help Pest Management Professionals (PMPs) manage resistance and provide effective fly control on their accounts.

Proven palatability and attractiveness to flies

A comprehensive commercial bait attractiveness survey from 2012 evaluated Zyrox against commonly-used commercial scatter baits in the fly control market.1 The field trials were conducted on a commercial confinement dairy farm of approximately 1,200 cows in Ontario, California over a four-day period.

Dishes of bait containing Zyrox (0.5% cyantraniliprole), QuickBayt® fly bait (0.5% imidacloprid), Golden Malrin® fly bait (1% methomyl), Quikstrike® fly scatter bait (0.5% dinotefuran) and sugar (5 grams) were separated by approximately 30 cm and placed in areas of high fly activity. The number of flies visiting the baits was recorded every 15 minutes for one hour, based on a photo assessment and visual count. After the 1-hour trial period each day, live flies were collected separately from each dish and taken back to the lab to assess mortality.

Zyrox was found to be up to six times more attractive than other baits tested.

Results showed most flies were generally attracted to Zyrox, with up to six times as many flies visiting Zyrox than the other baits. Cumulative mortality for flies collected directly from the bait also found Zyrox to be effective than the other baits tested.

This study demonstrates that resistance to imidacloprid- and methomyl-based baits in house flies continues to persist, as lowered visitation to certain baits suggested behavioral resistance, or avoidance, to the bait. With the novel mode of action of cyantraniliprole, Zyrox can serve as a valuable rotational product for Integrated Pest Management and Insect Resistance Management programs and can help ensure a life free from the nuisance of flies on your customers’ properties.
