Make your spider control seamless with microcap technology.

By ElRay Roper, Senior Technical Representative, Syngenta Professional Pest Management

Even after using tactics such as exclusion, removal and lighting adjustment, physical control methods are not always enough to control structure-infesting spiders. Fortunately, microencapsulated pyrethroid insecticides have demonstrated excellent efficacy against spiders. Polymer microcaps have an affinity for a spider’s exoskeleton, making them particularly effective at controlling spiders as they cross treated surfaces.

Syngenta offers three microencapsulated products that are labeled for spider control: Demand® CS insecticide, Demand EZ insecticide and Tandem® insecticide. All three products feature different concentrations of the active ingredient, lambda-cyhalothrin, with the unique structure of microcaps in iCAP technology. Developed by Syngenta, this proprietary innovation releases microcaps of multiple sizes over time to provide immediate and residual control for up to three months.

Some spiders (particularly web builders) may travel without making much body contact with a treated surface. The structure and cap size optimization of microcaps in iCAP technology greatly improves the chances of a spider acquiring a lethal dose of the insecticide. iCAP technology can deliver 10,000 microcaps per square inch of a surface, which makes the microcaps difficult for a spider to avoid. Microcaps can become lodged in a spider’s tarsal claws or the tufts of hairs between claws, as well as on other hairs on a spider’s leg.

Demand or Tandem can be used to control spiders as a spot spray, crack-and-crevice or perimeter exterior banded application. Because of the limited contact that spiders have with treated surfaces, applications should be directed primarily at areas where spiders live or rest, rather than areas they transit. These areas can include:

  • Corners of windows, closets or rooms where web-building spiders often exist
  • Attached garages, especially ceiling-wall junctures above the overhead garage door
  • Structural components, flooring, active webs and around harborages in attics, taking care not to direct sprays onto stored materials
  • Entry points around windows, doors and utility penetrations or weep holes for exterior treatments

Provide your customers an environment free from spiders with the proven efficacy of iCAP technology. For more information, please contact your local Syngenta sales representative or visit www.SyngentaPMP.com
